Dormouse nest tubes provide a cheap and easy method of determining the presence of dormice within a habitat. They are especially useful in non-traditional dormouse habitat such as hedgerows or areas of scrub. Composed of 2 parts – the plastic nest tube and a wooden tray, the tubes come with full instructions.

Nest box survey schemes for dormice are important for survey monitoring, habitat enhancement and re-introduction schemes
Dormouse boxes should only be used if there is evidence that there are dormice in the area. Site boxes well away from public areas, near a potential routeway such as honeysuckle or leaning branches. Position approximately 2.5m above ground, on trees or other suitable support with the hole facing inwards. Use wire loops rather than nails so the boxes can be easily removed.

With their lovely ginger-brown fur, long fur covered tails and deep black eyes, the dormouse is one of our most beautiful and intriguing small mammals. Sadly however, dormouse numbers are in steep decline.

This unique dormouse house provides an ideal nesting habitat and is designed to accommodate their natural ball-shaped nests.

The house is made from FSC timber and non toxic finishes. The opening swivel door can be used to access the nesting area. However, please note that as the dormouse is a ‘Protected Species’ in the United Kingdom, it is against the law to disturb the mice, and when occupied inspection should only be carried out by a licensed inspector.

Dormice are arboreal and nocturnal. Their primary habitat is within the vegetation layer of mature trees/woodland, strong thicket and thick hedgerow type vegetation. They eat mainly insects, seeds, nuts and pollen, but are particularly fond of hazelnuts (Corylus avellana), In the appropriate environment, if you find hazelnuts with a smooth round hole in their side or the bark of the hazel stripped it may be an indicator of dormice in the vicinity. Dormice can have up to 2 litters per year.

Siting - Locate the box in a quiet area on mature trees or in thick hedgerows. Position the box about 1 – 1.5m high with the hole facing the tree trunk

One of the main advantages of the KS is that the entrance is at the rear, facing the tree trunk, making it more difficult for birds to occupy it. With upper, lower and side opening next to the trunk the acutual access is ideally positioned but still well protected from potential predators.

The “2KS Special Drey for Common Dormice” has been fieldtested and is ideal for supporting and monitoring dormouse populations. After occupying the box dormice are very territorial, and their territory will extend between 150 and 200 m from the drey.

One of the few British mammals to hibernate in winter, hedgehogs sleep for at least four months of the year. It is essential that they first fatten up on plenty of high-energy food during the warmer months if they are to survive. The risk is greatest for youngsters born late in the season since they have less time to prepare. You can increase their chances by putting out nutritious food at night

Hedgehogs can often be found nesting in gardens under piles of logs or old sheds, or in compost heaps. But you can provide a hedgehog with a safer place to hibernate, and encourage it to become resident in your garden. If the house is suitable, a female may have her babies in it during the spring.

In the autumn, hedgehogs will begin to collect leaves, grass, bracken, straw and other materials to line the house, so you can encourage this process by putting some torn up newspaper or straw in the hedgehog house and putting it where it will not be disturbed – under a hedge is ideal. The entrance should face South for added protection from the elements. The house should then be covered with a piece of plastic, and then soil, twigs and leaves to make a protective and camouflaged dome. The entrance must be kept clear and you should not disturb the hedgehog during the winter when it is hibernating.

The house should be cleaned in the spring when no longer inhabited - if you put one small twig across the entrance, and this is moved, you will be able to tell if the house is in use.

It's only available in black - coloured versions would be pointless because it will be buried.
